MASTERING THE POP/ROCK AUDITION

with JEFF MADDEN

and special guests CHILINA KENNEDY and ANDREW SEOK

BE READY FOR ANYTHING!

Today's contemporary theatre scene requires the actor to be versed in a variety of Pop genres. Not only to have chosen the right song in your book, but to have the style vocally & physically mastered.

Your audition breakdown asks for a Pop/Rock song of your choice... are you confident you'll nail it? We are here for you! We want you to be prepared for ANYTHING in the audition room - for the vast numbers of existing musicals and those yet to be created.

Each week for 6 weeks performers will work one-on-one with JEFF MADDEN in a given style. Get a chance to be directed in that genre! The last 20 minutes of each class Jeff will explain/introduce the following week's genre, list all the musicals that fall within that genre, and what the vocal, physical, and acting style is. Then you will receive links to Musicnotes and Spotify lists so you can choose a song for the following week.

GENRES COVERED ARE AS FOLLOWS:

WEEK 1: 50's/60's

WEEK 2: 70's Folk Rock

WEEK 3: Disco

WEEK 4: 80's

WEEK 5: Contemporary Pop/Rock/Emo

WEEK 6: Contemporary Pop/R&B/Hip Hop or Country/Folk/Poetic

WEEK 6 (final 30min): Perform your favourite piece for Eclipse Leadership, CHILINA KENNEDY & ANDREW SEOK

Jeff Madden is a veteran of the musical theatre scene in Toronto, most recently appearing as ‘Kevin T. and Others’ in Come From Away (Mirvish). A Dora-Award winning actor, Jeff starred as ‘Frankie Valli’ in Jersey Boys for over three years in Toronto and across Australia. Other Toronto credits include Forever Plaid (Starvox/Mirvish), Echoes (Andrew Seok), and I Love You Because (Angelwalk) for which he garnered his second Dora nomination. Jeff has also performed for eight seasons at the Shaw Festival, recorded two CDs, appeared on TV’s ‘Murdoch Mysteries’ and ‘Mayday’, and has been teaching acting and singing for more than seven years at Randolph College, Sheridan College and privately.

We want you to leave this class feeling confident in your ability and remove the fear of the pop/rock audition. As such, we want all of our participants to get ample time to work each week.

AUDITIONING FOR SHAW

with FIONA BYRNE and ALEXIS GORDON

and special guest Shaw Associate Artistic Director KIMBERLEY RAMPERSAD

Want to know what it is like working & auditioning for The Shaw Festival?

Join the lovely team of Fiona Byrne and Alexis Gordon, as we break down your Shaw, or period piece (1), PLUS your traditional or contemporary musical theatre piece (1), to help keep your actor’s muscles in shape - stay inspired! - for auditioning again sometime soon for the Festival! Beautiful bonus? The brilliant Kimberley Rampersad will make a guest appearance on the last day of the workshop series to give feedback!

* Workshop Audition Requirements based loosely on Shaw’s 2019 Audition announcement:

  • Pick ONE from: a monologue from any period before WW2 (please, no Shakespeare!) OR a monologue from a piece inspired by/based in the time GBS was alive

  • And pick ONE from: 2 contrasting songs, preferably an up tempo and a ballad. At least 1 song should be a traditional musical theatrepiece – i.e. Gershwin, Cole Porter, Coward, Rodgers and Hart, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Loewe, etc. The second song need not be traditional musical theatre – it need not even be a musical theatre song – it should be a piece that shows your strengths and your vocal range. Please note: we may only hear one song.

  • We will be working in a group in front of the other actors/auditors!

*Need inspiration for a monologue? Upon signing up, you may request advice on period-appropriate monologue pieces! OR, don’t sing much? No problem! So many plays nowadays have singing in them, musicals or not. Upon signing up, you may request guidance in finding a simple, traditional or folk song for an audition!

Sign up to come play or audit with us! Stay inspired, stay playful!

GHOST QUARTET: The Actor-Musician

with BEAU DIXON and special guest DONNA GARNER

Beau Dixon, star from the intimate GHOST QUARTET musical, will lead a unique musical workshop on how to bring instruments into an audition/performance space as an actor/singer/creator. So many shows are requiring performers to come to auditions playing instruments (as we've all seen for various productions of Once, Beautiful, Company, etc.), but how do we adjust as singer-actors with an instrument in hand and audition confidently? How do we get comfortable playing in front of a panel and how do we marry ourselves to this new part of your rep book? Play together and find out how to navigate being a professional artist.

This class is 90min, once a week for three weeks. Students will have the chance to work one-on-one in a group setting over ZOOM with Beau. At the end of those three weeks, students partipating will have the chance to showcase their work for DONNA GARNER (DORA Winner, Artistic Director: Garner Theatre Productions https://www.garnertheatreproductions.com/) as well as a panel of other distinguished guests. Due to the nature of this format spaces are EXTREMELY LIMITED.

There is also the option to audit this class. Auditors will have to be muted and have their camera off for the duration. Auditing slots are per class, not sold as a bundle.
